Obtaining the Correct Software |
Both versions of Microsoft Office (2003 and 2007) contain most of the same applications. However, Office 2007
is the recommended version for Windows Vista users. Word, Excel, and Powerpoint have a new file format.
Office 2003 may be more appropriate for older computers with hardware limitations.
Microsoft Office 2003 is a suite of applications that
includes: Access, Excel, InfoPath, Outlook, PowerPoint, Publisher and Word.

Microsoft Office 2007 is a suite of applications that
includes: Access, Excel, InfoPath, Outlook, PowerPoint, Publisher and Word.

You may choose to install one or all of these applications.
- Office 2007 is recommended for Windows Vista (32-bit) users.
- Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint all have a new file format that is not backward compatible. However,
each of these applications provides the option of saving files in earlier file formats.
- This newest version of Office has a unique user interface called the Ribbon that presents a learning curve.
All default keyboard and quick menu commands work the same as earlier versions.

For use by Brown University faculty and staff only. User authentication is required.
Students may obtain Microsoft Office through the Microsoft Student Select Program.
Under the Microsoft Campus Agreement,
Office may only be used for Brown-related projects, whether on computers owned or leased by Brown University or on computers
personally owned by covered users. Covered users are defined as faculty and staff of Brown University.
Office must be uninstalled when the user is no longer affiliated with Brown University, and may not be installed on computers belonging to other institutions.
