About Secure Shell (ssh) 3.2.9 for Windows
Important Info

SSH will no longer be updating their non-commercial version of the Secure Shell client. Therefore, WinSCP is recommended as an alternative for SFTP/SCP, and PuTTY an alternative for SSH.

Restrictions

CIS has obtained a permanent license for this ssh version, open to all members of the Brown community. You can use this software on your computer whether it is on- or off-campus as long as you are affiliated with Brown University.

Information

Secure Shell (ssh) (vendor: SSH Communications Security) for Windows is a secure shell client licensed from SSH Communications Security. It is a replacement for telnet and provides two-way encrytped communication between a Windows machine and a Unix computer (which must be running the ssh daemon). The version (ssh 3.2.9) expects the daemon to be ssh3. ssh can be configured to tunnel X-windows.

A secure ftp client is also packaged with ssh and will be installed at the same time. For more details see www.ssh.com.

All those affiliated with Brown University (faculty, staff, students) are granted a right to use the software for University-related business. Download and
Installation
  1. Quit all applications.
  2. Click on the link below to download ssh.
  3. Click Save.
  4. Select a download location and click Save.
  5. When the download is complete, click Close.
  6. Navigate to the installer location and double-click on install_ssh329.exe.
  7. Select a folder to extract the installer and click Extract.
  8. If you are installing over an earlier version, click OK when asked if you want to upgrade. If you are upgrading, skip steps 9, 12 and 13.
  9. At the Welcome screen, click Next.
  10. If you are updating your demo copy of ssh, select 'Site License.' The installer will copy the site license file, license.dat, to your existing ssh directory.
  11. View the license agreement and click Yes to accept.
  12. Choose a destination folder by clicking Browse, then click Next.
  13. Accept Program and Existing Folder choices and click Next.
  14. Click Next to install the components that are checked.
  15. Accept the current settings and click Next.
  16. When you are notified that the setup is complete, click Finish.
  17. After setup, the site license file will be copied to your ssh directory.

Notes
  1. To initiate an ssh connection, double-click the SSH Secure Shell Client icon on the desktop. To initiate a secure ftp connection, double-click the SSH Secure File Transfer icon on the desktop.
  2. In the window that opens, click the Quick Connect button to specify the Host Name and User Name you would like to use; then click Connect.
  3. Click Yes at the Host Identification window to accept the host's public key.
  4. Once you have entered your password and login is complete, an Add Profile window will appear that allows you to save the profile settings for this host by specifying a name for the profile and clicking the Add Profile button.

Troubleshooting Tips

Problem:
You receive the following error while installing, "Error while parsing command line arguments or reading setup.ini: No such interface supported. "

Solution:
Delete contents of the "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Installshield" folder.
