The Windows Internet Explorer 8 Block and Unblock Tools (vendor: Brown University) will allow you to enable or disable Microsoft Internet Explorer version 8 from automatically installing. CIS has performed limited testing on Internet Explorer 8 in Brown's computing environment. This program will have no effect on versions of Internet Explorer other than version 8.

Please check with your DCC prior to applying this tool. If your computer is in Active Directory, it is possible that the blocker has already been applied for your department.

1. Download the block Internet Explorer 8 tool by clicking on the appropriate link below.
2. In the "File Download" window click "Save."
3. At the "Save As" dialog, click "Save."
4. When the download is complete, navigate to your computer's download location and double-click on "blockie8.cmd. Windows Vista users must right-click on blockie8.cmd and select "Run as Administrator."
5. When you receive the security warning "Are you sure you want to run this software?" click Run.
6. Vista users must click Continue at the User Account Control dialog.
7. When the tool finishes, a command window will appear displaying the message "Command completed successfully, Press any key to continue."
8. Press a key to close the window.
9. No further messages will appear. Block IE8 is applied and the Internet Explorer 8 update will no longer be listed as an automatic update.

To reverse the IE8 block, download and apply the "Unblock Internet Explorer 8 Tool" (provided below).
