Note: Adobe Acrobat 6 should only be installed if you need to create or edit PDF files. Please use Adobe Acrobat Reader for viewing PDF files.

If you are submitting an NSF grant proposal using the FastLane system, you need to create PDFs that meet NSF's specifications. Review the information on the following website to make sure you are creating your PDFs correctly: http://www.fastlane.nsf.gov/documents/pdf_create/pdfcreate_01.jsp.

If you are creating a PDF for use in course work, contact the CIS faculty liaison at CIS_Faculty_Liaison@brown.edu for assistance and information.

All other users should view the documentation and online training available from Computer Education's website for assistance in creating a simple PDF.

Troubleshooting
Tips

Problem: An older version of KeyAccess could cause an error to occur during the installation of Adobe Acrobat 6.

Solution: If you encounter a message during the Acrobat 6 installation notifying you that KeyAccess must be installed, simply download and install the current version of KeyAccess, then run the Adobe Acrobat 6 installer.

Problem: Once Service Pack 3 is applied to Office XP, starting a new email message may result in a pop-up notification that a program is trying to access the address book. You can continue by selecting either option: allow for a period of time or not.

Solution: Follow these steps:

  1. Go to the Control Panel (Start..Control Panel).
  2. Double-click on Add/Remove Programs.
  3. Select Adobe Acrobat 6.0 Professional from the list of programs and click on the "Change" button.
  4. Click "Next" at the setup window.
  5. Leave the Modify checkbox selected and click "Next."
  6. Expand the Create Adobe PDF folder and the Acrobat PDF Maker folder.
  7. Click on the Microsoft Outlook drop-down list to select "This feature will not be available."
  8. Click "Next."
  9. Click "Update."
  10. Click "Finish."

Problem: Acrobat Reader is no longer the default program for opening PDF files. Acrobat Pro opens instead.

Solution: Run the ForceReader Utility
