Total Academic Headcount (TAH) License for Matlab

Overview

On May 1, 2011, CIS entered into a contract with The MathWorks, Inc. to supply Brown with a TAH license for Matlab. This new license enables Brown to provide nearly unlimited use of the Matlab application and allows Brown to license additional select toolboxes for campus-wide use. Brown is now starting a transition from our previous license to general use of the TAH license.

Toolboxes Included in TAH Core License

  • Bioinformatics Toolbox
  • Control Systems Toolbox
  • Curve Fitting Toolbox
  • Data Acquisition Toolbox
  • Image Processing Toolbox
  • Instrument Control Toolbox
  • Optimization Toolbox
  • Partial Differential Equations Toolbox
  • Signal Processing Blockset
  • Signal Processing Toolbox
  • SimMechanics
  • SimScape
  • Simulink
  • Stateflow
  • Statistics Toolbox
  • Symbolic Math Toolbox

Toolboxes Additionally Licensed by Brown for University Use

  • Communications Systems Toolbox
  • Mapping Toolbox
  • MATLAB C Compiler
  • Neural Network Toolbox
  • Parallel Computing Toolbox
  • Partial Differential Equation Toolbox
  • Simulink Control Design
  • System Identification Toolbox
  • Wavelet Toolbox

Matlab Download Procedures

Over time, CIS will be transitioning all copies of Matlab to The Mathworks' "designated computer" model. To obtain a "designated computer" downloadable copy of Matlab, please follow these instructions. (IMPORTANT: You must use your @brown.edu email address to register.) After you have created your account, you will be able to download new versions of Matlab when they are released, and you will no longer need to be directly on the Brown network to use the software.

Faculty and Staff with existing licenses

Matlab licenses and toolboxes listed above that were previously purchased with an @brown.edu address have been placed in "hibernation" mode by The MathWorks. Brown's former license is superseded by our new University-wide TAH license for Matlab. Maintenance is also covered by the TAH license, so you will not need to continue paying The MathWorks for your primary license (and toolboxes, if also covered).

This means that you still own the perpetual license that you've purchased, but you must download Brown's current TAH licensed software if you wish to continue using Matlab as you have in the past. Should Brown discontinue the TAH license in the future, you will have 60 days to reinstitute your previous license and begin paying maintenance again so that you may upgrade to the current version at that time.

Adding new toolboxes

If you wish to purchase a Matlab toolbox that is not available as part of Brown's TAH license, you may contact Software_Services@brown.edu to request a quote for the toolbox you need.
