FileMaker Agreement

FileMaker's newest suite of database management applications is now available for use by the Brown community. Responding to customer demand, CIS was able to negotiate an agreement on behalf of the campus, representing a 50% discount over the standard educational volume price.

Why upgrade?

  • FileMaker Pro 6 is the most current version, fully supported by CIS, and is designed for use with Windows XP/2000 and Mac OS X. It also works with older operating systems.
  • CIS discontinued support for version 4.1 on June 1, 2003.
  • While FileMaker Pro 6 will work with databases created with earlier versions, once a database has been opened by someone using version 6.0, that database cannot be opened by someone using a previous version of FileMaker.
  • Improved features such as: Office-like toolbars, new Layout/Report wizards, Format Painter, added simplification in moving data between Office products and FileMaker, new and updated templates, improved find and replace command, plus several features making it simpler to use it on the web.
  • The license agreement allows for the installation of FileMaker Pro 6 on home and mobile computers.

Support and Training

  • FileMaker Pro 6 is fully supported while FileMaker Pro 6 Unlimited will have partial support. There will be no support, however, for Mobile, Developer and Server.
  • Training for version 4.1 ended in March. Contact the Help Desk for assistance with installation or for answers to basic application questions.
  • Computer Education offers classes on FileMaker 6 for staff and faculty. There are also student classes offered through the PASS program.
